A quick overview of the topics covered in this article.
As of March 2026, here´s some frequently asked questions about the new Trails management policies:
What is the purpose of the new pricing and booking model?
The model aims to control carrying capacity, improve visitor flow management, enhance security, and improve the tourist experience, while simultaneously ensuring environmental sustainability and operational predictability.
What changes in load capacity management?
The capacity will be distributed across 30-minute slots, staggering the presence of visitors throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset, thus avoiding peak concentration times.
Can reservations still be made through the SIMplifica platform?
Yes. SIMplifica remains the single platform for booking and access control. Prior registration of all visitors, regardless of age or condition, will now be mandatory.
What are the applicable rates in 2026?
The amount of the fees is duly published in ANNEX I of Ordinance No. 801/2025. Check here.
Do residents of Madeira pay a tax?
No. Access is free for residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), but registration and reservation are mandatory due to capacity control.
How do I pay the daily or multi-day (3 and 7 days) fee for classified hiking trails?
Currently, there is no visible standalone option to pay a daily or multi-day (3 or 7 days) fee on the Simplifica Portal. To make the payment correctly, you must:
1: Access the Simplifica Portal;
2: Select a Classified Hiking Trail (PR);
3: Proceed with the process and, when prompted, add the remaining routes you wish to take;
4: Finally, the system will automatically apply the most advantageous option, presenting the best available value — whether through individual payment per trip or through a daily or multi-day rate, whichever is more favorable.
How does the pre-booking system work for operators with a protocol?
Up to 30 days prior :
It is possible to pre-book without receiving an invoice.
Adjustments and cancellations without penalty.
On the 30th day before the activity :
The invoice is issued automatically, based on the confirmed reservations.
Between the 29th day and the day the PR is used, the corresponding invoice is automatically issued.
What is the payment deadline for invoiced reservations?
For reservations confirmed on the 30th day – Payment must be made up to 48 hours before use. A 28-day credit period is granted.
For bookings made between the 29th day and the date of the activity – Payment must be made within 7 days.
What happens if the operator doesn’t pay on time?
Failure to pay will result in automatic cancellation of reservations. In repeated cases, it may lead to the suspension of the agreement, with the loss of any preferential conditions.
Is it possible to change the number of participants after the invoice has been issued?
Once the invoice has been issued, it is not possible to change the number of participants.
What if a group is cancelled due to not reaching the minimum number of participants?
Cancellations after the invoice has been issued entitle you to a credit, provided they are justified by a decision of the IFCN.
Are refunds or rescheduling options available?
Yes, exclusively when the condition is decided by the IFCN (e.g., safety, closure, environmental risk). In these cases, rescheduling is guaranteed, subject to availability, or a full refund.
What to do when a tour with confirmed reservations is closed?
Rescheduling the route through the SIMplifica platform and the refund process through a request to IFCN.
Is it possible to make a reservation for the following day?
Yes, on the SIMplifica platform.
When do these rules come into effect?
The model is scheduled for January 1, 2026. The platform’s technical changes are currently in the testing phase, and the sector will be informed before full operationalization.
