The Hidden Volcanic Arch: Your Complete Guide to Poças das Lesmas (Seixal)

When travelers plan their Madeira Island road trip, the North Coast is usually dominated by a few massive highlights. Everyone immediately pins the famous natural pools of Porto Moniz and the dramatic, Jurassic-style black sands of seixal beach to their digital maps.

But tucked quietly between the towering green cliffs of Seixal is a geological masterpiece that many day-trippers drive right past without even realizing it is there.

Welcome to Poça das Lesmas.

Featuring a spectacular, naturally formed volcanic stone archway and crystal-clear turquoise water, this hidden lava pool offers one of the most raw, authentic, and photogenic swimming experiences in all of Europe. If you are looking to escape the midday crowds and immerse yourself in Madeira’s untamed beauty, this is the spot.

In this comprehensive 2026 guide, we will reveal exactly how to find this hidden gem, how to navigate the steep descent, and why exploring it requires slowing down and embracing the island’s rhythm.

What Makes Poças das Lesmas So Special?

The name Poça das Lesmas translates rather humbly to “Puddle of the Slugs” (referring to the sea slugs and marine life that inhabit the rocks), but do not let the name fool you. This is a breathtaking coastal oasis.

Millions of years ago, a violent volcanic eruption sent rivers of lava flowing into the freezing Atlantic Ocean. As the lava cooled and cracked against the crashing waves, it formed jagged, otherworldly basalt basins.

What sets Poças das Lesmas apart from other pools on the island is its incredible architecture:

  • The Stone Arch: The ocean has carved a magnificent, perfect archway directly through the black lava rock. It perfectly frames the deep blue Atlantic and provides a dramatic backdrop for swimmers and photographers alike.

  • The Clarity: Because it is slightly protected from the open ocean swells, the water trapped inside the main basin is unbelievably clear. You can easily see the bottom of the pool and the small fish darting between the rocks.

  • The Atmosphere: Unlike the fully modernized swimming complexes, Poça das Lesmas feels wild. It is a place where the towering green mountains seem to drop vertically straight into your swimming pool.

How to Get There & Where to Park

Finding Poça das Lesmas is an adventure, as it is hidden from the main highway.

  • The Location: It is located in the parish of Seixal, just a quick 10-minute drive east of Porto Moniz via the modern VE2 coastal highway.

  • Where to Park: As you enter Seixal, do not drive down to the main harbor beach. Instead, after you exit the main VE2 road (immediately before a tunne), drive for one minute, look for signs pointing toward Poça das Lesmas. There is a small, designated parking on the left, near the top of the cliff, right off the main road. If you´ve made it to the church, you´ve gone too far.

  • The Descent: This is the most important part of the journey. To reach the pools, you must walk down a very steep, paved pathway that zigzags down the side of the cliff. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to walk down. Take your time! The views on the way down are spectacular, but you will definitely feel the burn in your calves on the walk back up.

Practical Tips for the Perfect Swim

Because this is a raw, relatively unmanaged natural environment, a little preparation goes a long way.

  • Wear Water Shoes: This is non-negotiable for Madeira’s volcanic coast. The basalt rocks surrounding the pool are incredibly sharp, and the wet pathways can be slippery. Aqua shoes will protect your feet and give you the confidence to explore.

  • Check the Tides: The magic of Poça das Lesmas depends heavily on the ocean. At low to mid-tide, the pool is calm, perfectly filled, and ideal for swimming. During a very high tide or a heavy winter swell, the Atlantic will violently wash over the protective rocks, making it dangerous to swim. Don´t go in if the waves are too big, and are washing the entire place. Sadly, in the past several people tragically died there, dragged by the power of waves. Always be careful!

  • Pack Light but Smart: Remember that steep hill? You have to carry everything back up it. Bring only the essentials: a towel, water shoes, a bottle of water, your camera, and reef-safe sunscreen.

  • Facilities: There are minimal facilities at the bottom, though a small, seasonal cliffside snack bar operates during the peak summer months, offering cold drinks and a place to catch your breath.

🤫 The Jolie Local Secret

Most tourists who do manage to find Poça das Lesmas visit in the middle of the afternoon, right after they finish exploring the nearby seixal beach. By then, the small pool area can feel crowded, and the steep hike back up the cliff in the midday sun is exhausting.

Our local secret: Make this your very last stop of the day.

Because the pool sits at the bottom of a massive eastern-facing cliff, it catches the absolute most brilliant, ethereal morning light. If you hike down to Poça das Lesmas around 8:30 AM, you will likely have the entire volcanic archway completely to yourself. You can float in the silent, crystal-clear water while the rest of the island is still waking up.

Stop Commuting to Paradise. Live in It.

Imagine trying to experience the North Coast on a rushed day trip from Funchal. You have to wake up early, drive over an hour through the mountains, and then frantically try to squeeze in a swim at Poça das Lesmas, a photo at seixal beach, and a hike through the misty fanal forest—all while dreading the two-hour drive back to the south coast before dark.

When you travel like that, you miss the magic. You miss the quiet mornings. You are too rushed to enjoy the moment.

When you make Porto Moniz your home base, the entire wild North Coast becomes your personal backyard. You can take the breezy 10-minute drive to Seixal for a private morning swim under the volcanic arch, retreat to your local home for a hot shower and a relaxed lunch, and spend the afternoon lounging by the natural pools in town.

You trade the stress of the highway for the true rhythm of island life.
